Using a Dummy to Settle your Baby

The journey of comforting and soothing your baby can be challenging for any parent – new or experienced. Even if you’re a veteran with the process and you feel like you’ve got it down pat, there’s always surprises or hiccups along the way.

Dummies or pacifiers are a great tool to assist in calming babies and bringing a sense of relief, but there are a few things to take note of before relying on them too heavily. First of all, it's important to take into consideration whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding from birth.  Dummies require a different sucking motion, and this can take your little one some getting used to. It is recommended not to introduce them until breastfeeding is well-established, whereas bottle-fed infants may take a dummy from birth.

To ensure that the dummy is not disrupting your baby's feeding patterns, no matter how they are fed, always ensure that they are not offered one as comfort when they are hungry. This can be confusing and can disrupt both processes, which can lead to a cranky little one and an exhausted parent.

It goes without saying that dummies need to be kept clean and should not be given to your baby if they have been thrown on the floor. It is advised to have several, pre-sterilised pacifiers on hand too; because, well, we all know babies like to throw everything on the floor.

You should always thoroughly inspect your pacifiers for any signs of damage or wear and tear. It is recommended that dummies should be replaced every 4 – 6 weeks.

If you have any concerns about introducing a dummy to your infant be sure to speak to your GP or MCH.

What to look for in a dummy

There are many kinds of designs on the market these days – from fancy features through to your primary options. So which ones do you choose? We recommend opting for those that:

  • have a solid plastic shield that includes air holes;
  • have a classic round cherry teat which resembles a mother’s nipple;
  • is the correct size for the age of your child;
  • can be easily gripped by the handle so that it can be removed at any time.

What's an excellent option to start with?
